On April 25th, 2011, the Descendents returned to the UK for the first time in 14 years. From what is understood, the tour was short. Groezrock festival, a date in Berlin and 2 shows in London. Standing tickets for the 25th sold out quickly and fans had travelled from all over the UK, Europe and even further afield for the show, spending hundreds on trains, flights, coaches and hotels.. Being a massive Descendents fans, and having not seen them since they last played in the UK in 1997, myself and my brother had been looking forward to the show for months. My brother had travelled from abroad, sorted out time off work and was terribly excited to see his favourite band, with tickets that had been bought for him as a birthday present. As the band started to play, it was evident that Milos voice was shot and had gone. What followed was one of the most painful sets to watch. A combination of the band swapping members around, Milo doing some weird death metal attempt with his voice and various members of other bands, including their roadie at one point, singing their songs. A show that was meant to be incredible was a complete shambles and we all left upset, and terribly disappointed.. Noone was smiling, no one was happy and memories of the 1997 shows were completely ruined. Word is that Milos voice blew out in Berlin on Sunday night, continuing with the last two dates was questioned and he thought that it would be ok. Here is my gripe. If his voice was not up to scratch, then the show should have been cancelled in the first place. Why would you return after 14 years, and charge £25 (£18 before ticket company charges) and put on a show that was not 100%. Instead of throwing your mic on the floor and nearly blinding a member of your band, why did you not hold your hands up and go “guys, this is not going to be good. We are coming back in August. Lets just reschedule. Yes, they will be disappointed but they will be more disappointed if we aren’t at our best. Lets give them a show that they are going to remember for the right reasons not the wrong ones.”.
Unfortunately, this did not happen, and what the crowd were given was a ton of bad black flag covers and an array of Descendents songs by, what looked like, a bad Descendents cover band.
I understand that this was not Milos fault, and they thought they were doing what was best, but it sickens me to read that they are not cancelling tonights show, but doing a “Milo and friends” set.. maybe it will be better as they can structure the show a bit more, but the band are still not giving the fans a full Descendents set, which is what people have paid for.
Do the right thing. Cancel the show, and reschedule these two dates or give us our money back. Do not expect us to buy more tickets for the shows that you have said you will be doing around Reading and Leeds festival.
Give us faith in the Descendents again.
